What is EN 471?

EN471 is a technical standard used in the manufacturing of high-visibility clothing. It sets out the requirements for the design, materials, and performance of such garments, ensuring that workers who operate in hazardous environments are easily seen by others. This standard plays a crucial role in enhancing safety in industries such as construction, road maintenance, logistics, and emergency services.

The Requirements of EN471

To meet the EN471 standard, high-visibility clothing must adhere to specific criteria. Firstly, it should have fluorescent colors like bright yellow, orange, or red. These colors provide maximum visibility during the day. Secondly, the garment must incorporate retroreflective materials, which reflect light back to its source at night or low-light conditions, making the wearer visible from a distance.

In addition to the color and reflective materials, EN471 mandates that high-visibility clothing should have a minimum amount of background material and a certain level of retroreflective tape. The proportions of the fluorescent and retroreflective areas depend on the class of high visibility required, ranging from Class 1 (the lowest level) to Class 3 (the highest level).

Types of High-Visibility Clothing

High-visibility clothing comes in different types suitable for various work settings. Vests, jackets, trousers, and coveralls are the most common options available. Vests offer the least coverage but are lightweight and easy to wear. Jackets provide more protection against wind and rain, while trousers and coveralls offer full-body visibility.

Besides the standard high-visibility clothing, there are also specialized garments designed for specific purposes. Flame-retardant high-visibility clothing, for example, is essential in industries where workers may be exposed to flames or arc flashes. Cold-weather high-visibility clothing contains additional insulation to keep workers warm in low temperatures.

Caring for High-Visibility Clothing

Proper care and maintenance are crucial to ensure the long lifespan and functionality of high-visibility clothing. Before washing, it is important to remove any visible dirt or stains. Most high-visibility garments can be machine-washed, but it is recommended to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding water temperature and detergents.

To maintain reflectivity, avoid using bleach, fabric softeners, and ironing directly on reflective tape. It's also advisable to avoid excessive heat when tumble drying or ironing the garments. Regular inspection of the clothing for wear and tear, such as fading colors or peeling tape, is essential. Damaged or non-compliant clothing should be replaced promptly to ensure the continued safety of workers.

Overall, EN471 provides a standardized approach to high-visibility clothing, promoting safety and visibility in hazardous work environments. By adhering to this technical standard, employers can protect their workers and reduce the risk of accidents, ultimately saving lives.
