What is EN 1077:2007?

EN 1077:2007 is a technical standard that pertains to head protection for Alpine skiers and snowboarders. It provides guidelines and requirements for helmets used in these activities, with the aim of enhancing safety and reducing the risk of head injuries.

The Importance of EN 1077:2007

Head injuries are unfortunately common in Alpine sports, especially when accidents occur at high speeds. The EN 1077:2007 standard helps to minimize the severity of these injuries by ensuring that helmets meet specific criteria for quality and performance.

This standard sets out various tests and specifications that a helmet must pass in order to be deemed suitable for use. These include impact absorption, resistance to penetration, stability, and retention system effectiveness, among others. Each aspect is carefully evaluated to guarantee that helmets provide adequate protection.

The Testing Process

To comply with EN 1077:2007, helmets undergo rigorous testing procedures. One of the critical tests is the impact absorption test, which measures how well the helmet cushions impact forces. Helmets are dropped from different heights onto various surfaces to assess their ability to absorb energy and protect the wearer's head.

The penetration test evaluates the helmet's ability to withstand sharp objects or edges. A pointed striker is dropped onto the helmet to determine if any part can be penetrated, which might endanger the wearer. This test is crucial in preventing severe head injuries caused by sharp objects on the slopes.

EN 1077:2007 Certification and Compliance

When analyzing helmets for compliance with EN 1077:2007, it's essential to look for valid certification markings. An "EN 1077" symbol, along with a specific class (A, B, C), is typically displayed on certified helmets. Class A provides the highest level of protection, while Class C offers the lowest.

It's important for skiers and snowboarders to choose helmets that comply with this standard and are properly certified. Wearing a helmet that meets EN 1077:2007 ensures that it has undergone rigorous testing and meets minimum safety requirements, providing users with confidence in their head protection.
